Thanks so much for supporting our read-a-thon to earn money for computers!! We appreciate all the donations of time, money, food, and prizes. Our students are amazing! They stayed after school and read for 5 hours!! To date we have $5,500 in donations and pledges!! This includes a $2,000 donation from United Nissan. Wow, what a great supporter of education! Additionally, Joe's Crab Shack has agreed to host a Piggott night on December 11, 2003. Piggott's 5th grade will receive 10% of Joe's sales on that date. So, let's have dinner at Joe's! SMITHS has also agreed to let the 5th grade teachers come be checkers for a few hours to help raise additional funds. Date to be announced soon. Join me in thanking all our helpers last night. Besides our supportive administration and wonderful faculty, we want to thank Mrs. Otjes for being our parent chairman, Mrs. Smith for organizing our parent's lounge/sybling room, the Gaudioso family and the Monte Carlo for donating dinner, and all the parents, students, and teachers that came out to pitch in and help. Additionally, we want to thank local businesses for contributing to our drawing. We received prizes from Barnes and Noble, Blockbuster, IHOP, SMITHS, Albertsons, McDonalds, Learning Express, and Village Square theaters.
Sincerely,
5th Grade Team

November 7, 2003
Dear Parents, Students, and Piggott Community,
Historically, at Piggott Elementary, we have been blessed with a high computer-to-student ratio. Thanks to Lesley University using Piggott Elementary’s facilities for higher-education training we have benefited from numerous classroom computer labs and extra school printers. Last month, Lesley University completed their own training facility and moved out of Piggott. As we mourn the loss of the added technology, we recognize the advantage our students had in accessing computers. In an effort to replace those computers and continue to lead the way in technology integration, we are asking our community to fund 20 new eMacs to be shared with our five fifth-grade classes.
Students will benefit from this effort immensely, and we would like to give them an opportunity to play a key role in bringing these computers to Piggott. We have decided to hold a read-a-thon and encourage your family and our community to participate. Our goal is to raise $12,000. That works out to a goal of $2,400 per classroom or $80 per student.
To accomplish this goal we are asking our fifth graders to take part in a five-hour read-a-thon on Friday, November 21, 2003. The event will begin directly after school and last until 8:06 p.m. Students will preselect books they would like to read and collect pledges from family, friends, and community partners willing to help raise money for computers.
We are excited to sponsor this event and know it will help give the students ownership of the project. Teachers and administrators recognize the need for technology integration at public schools to enhance the curriculum, meet and exceed academic standards, and help students compete in an increasingly technological society. Many learning projects are planned to help students use technology effectively. Our fifth grade team is anxious to share some of these learning strategies with you. During the read-a-thon we will be holding mini-workshops in Piggott’s computer lab to introduce you to some of the projects and webquests your students will complete. The first workshop will be held from 5:00-5:45 p.m. and another from 7:00-7:45 p.m. Parents are also invited to have dinner with us between 6:15-6:45 p.m.
Additional help is needed and interested parents and individuals may contact any member of the fifth grade team to learn how to get involved further. As teachers, we appreciate the opportunity we have to work with your students each day. We are thankful to have such a supportive community and amazing students that truly love to learn. We know with your help this effort will be a success. As always, we thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Piggott Elementary’s Fifth Grade Team
